The Stone in Your Ring Has a Story. Here Is How to Read It.

When you buy a diamond engagement ring from a brand you have never met in person, you are making a decision based almost entirely on trust. You cannot hold the stone. You cannot examine it under a loupe or ask a gemologist to walk you through its characteristics while you watch. You are reading a description on a screen and deciding whether it is true.

Before Your Ring Is Made, Your Diamond Goes to an Independent Expert

Before any stone at Real Canary is set into a piece of jewellery, it goes to one of three independent gemological laboratories. IGI. GIA. SGL. These are not organisations we partner with or have a commercial relationship with. They are independent institutions whose entire purpose is to assess gemstones accurately and impartially, and whose grading reports are recognised and trusted by jewellers, insurers, and buyers across the world.

The laboratory receives the stone. They examine it. They grade it. And they issue a report.

That report is the truth about your diamond. Not our version of it. Theirs.

The Four Things That Define Your Diamond's Quality - Explained

Every grading report is built around four criteria. The jewellery industry calls them the 4Cs, and they are the universal language of diamond quality. Here is what each one means in terms that actually help you make a decision.

Cut - the single most important thing about your diamond, and the one most buyers underestimate

Cut has nothing to do with the shape of the diamond. It is about precision - how accurately the stone has been faceted and polished to interact with light. A beautifully cut diamond takes the light that enters it and sends it straight back through the top of the stone in a blaze of brilliance. A poorly cut stone, regardless of how large or how clear, leaks that light out the sides and bottom and sits on your finger looking flat and lifeless.

Every stone in our collection is graded Very Good or Excellent on cut. That is not a coincidence. It is a decision we make at the sourcing stage, every single time, because cut is the criterion that determines how your ring actually looks on your hand.

Colour - why the whiteness of your diamond matters more than most people realise.

Colour measures how colourless the stone appears, on a scale that runs from D at the top - perfectly colourless, like looking through a window - all the way to Z, which carries a visible warmth. The difference between grades is subtle but cumulative. A D and a J stone look noticeably different when placed side by side, even to an untrained eye.

Our collection sits between D and H, which covers the colourless to near-colourless range. Within that band, the stone on your finger will face up bright, white, and clean in every light, whether you are indoors, outdoors, or somewhere in between.

Clarity - what is inside the stone, and why most inclusions are nothing to worry about.

Every natural diamond and most lab grown stones contain tiny internal characteristics called inclusions, traces of the conditions under which they formed. A Flawless stone has none visible even under 10x magnification. An Included stone has characteristics visible to the naked eye. Most stones in our collection grade at VS1 or better, which means that any inclusions present are minor, require magnification to find, and will never affect the beauty of what you see with your own eyes.

Carat - the measure of weight that buyers most often confuse with size.

Carat is the weight of the stone, precise to two decimal places. It is often conflated with size, but carat is a measure of mass, not dimension. Two stones of identical carat weight can appear different sizes depending on how they are cut. A beautifully cut stone faces up larger than its weight suggests. A poorly cut stone of the same weight faces up smaller. Which is one more reason why cut is the criterion we start with every time.

Your Diamond Has Its Own Identity - and You Can Verify It Independently, Any Time You Want

Every stone that passes through an IGI, GIA, or SGL laboratory receives a unique identification number. That number is laser-inscribed on the girdle of the stone — the thin edge around its circumference - in text too small to see with the naked eye but readable under magnification.

Your diamond is not just a diamond. It is a specific, documented, traceable stone with its own grading history. If you ever want to verify it independently - and we genuinely encourage you to - you can enter the certificate number directly at igi.org and see everything the laboratory recorded about your stone.
