What are Lab Grown Diamonds?

Lab grown diamonds, sometimes referred to as lab-created, man-made or cultured diamonds, are genuine diamonds produced in highly controlled laboratory environments. They are made from pure carbon and have the same crystal structure, sparkle, hardness and durability as natural diamonds found beneath the earth’s surface. The key distinction lies only in how they are formed: natural diamonds develop underground over billions of years, while lab grown diamonds are created in a matter of weeks using advanced technology.

In recent years, lab grown diamonds have become widely accepted across the jewellery industry. Organisations such as the FTC, IGI and GIA recognise and grade them using the same standards applied to mined diamonds, including the well-known 4Cs: cut, colour, clarity and carat.

It is also important to understand that lab grown diamonds are completely different from imitation stones like cubic zirconia or moissanite. Simulants may resemble diamonds visually, but they do not share the same chemical or physical properties. Lab grown diamonds, on the other hand, are real diamonds in every scientific and legal sense. Even professional jewellers cannot identify the difference without specialised testing equipment.

How are Lab Grown Diamonds Made?

Lab grown diamonds are created using advanced processes that replicate the natural conditions under which diamonds form deep within the earth.

HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature)

HPHT technology was one of the earliest methods used to create gem-quality diamonds. In this process, a small diamond seed is exposed to extremely high pressure and temperatures exceeding 1,400°C inside a carbon-rich chamber. Under these conditions, carbon atoms bond and crystallise around the seed, gradually forming a diamond crystal over several weeks.

CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition)

CVD is currently the most widely used process for producing jewellery-grade lab grown diamonds. A thin slice of diamond seed material is placed inside a vacuum chamber filled with gases such as methane and hydrogen. When energy is introduced through microwaves or lasers, carbon atoms separate from the gas and slowly build layer upon layer on the seed crystal, forming a diamond. This process is known for producing diamonds with excellent clarity and consistency.

Both HPHT and CVD diamonds are visually and chemically identical to mined diamonds, and both can be certified by leading gemological laboratories.

Are Lab Grown Diamonds Real Diamonds?

Yes, lab grown diamonds are absolutely real diamonds. They score 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, exactly like mined diamonds, making them one of the hardest materials on earth. They reflect light in the same way, deliver the same fire and brilliance, and are equally durable for everyday wear.

A common misconception is that “lab grown” means fake or synthetic in the sense of being an imitation. In reality, the term simply refers to the environment in which the diamond was formed. The result is still a genuine diamond with the same physical and optical characteristics as one mined from the earth.

Lab Grown Diamond vs Natural Diamond — Price Comparison

One of the biggest reasons buyers choose lab grown diamond jewellery is the price advantage. Because lab grown diamonds are produced through controlled manufacturing rather than mining, they are significantly more affordable than natural diamonds of comparable quality.

For example, a 1-carat lab grown diamond with excellent cut and VS clarity can cost thousands less than a mined diamond with the same specifications. This gives buyers the flexibility to choose larger carat sizes or higher quality grades while staying within budget.

The lower cost is mainly due to a shorter and more efficient supply chain. Natural diamonds move through mining, rough trading, cutting, wholesale distribution and retail stages before reaching the customer. Lab grown diamonds eliminate many of these steps, reducing overheads significantly.

That said, lab grown diamonds generally do not retain resale value in the same way natural diamonds sometimes do. Most buyers choose them for their beauty, ethical sourcing and value rather than investment potential.

Why Buyers Are Choosing Lab Grown Diamond Jewellery?

Lab grown diamonds have rapidly become a preferred choice for modern jewellery buyers across the US, UK, Australia and Europe. Their popularity continues to rise because they combine luxury, value and responsible sourcing in a way that appeals to today’s consumers.

Better Value for Money

Buyers can often choose a significantly larger or higher-grade diamond without dramatically increasing their budget. This makes lab grown engagement rings and fine jewellery far more accessible while still offering the same appearance and durability as natural diamonds.

Ethical and Conflict-Free

Because they are created in controlled environments rather than mined from the earth, lab grown diamonds avoid many of the ethical concerns associated with traditional diamond mining. For many shoppers, this transparency provides added peace of mind.

Reduced Environmental Impact

Lab grown diamonds avoid large-scale mining operations, land excavation and heavy water usage. Although energy is still required during production, the environmental footprint is generally lower than traditional mining methods.

Higher Quality Access

Modern production techniques allow lab grown diamonds to be created with exceptional colour and clarity grades. Buyers can often access near-colourless and eye-clean stones at prices that would be far more expensive in mined diamonds.

Understanding the 4Cs of Lab Grown Diamonds

Lab grown diamonds are graded using the same internationally recognised standards as natural diamonds. Understanding the 4Cs can help you choose the right stone for your jewellery.

Cut

Cut determines how effectively a diamond reflects light. A well-cut diamond appears brighter, more brilliant and more lively. Excellent or Ideal cuts are typically the most desirable because they maximise sparkle.

Colour

Diamond colour ranges from D (completely colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown). D to F grades are considered colourless, while G to H diamonds are near-colourless and still appear white to the naked eye.

Clarity

Clarity refers to tiny internal inclusions or external blemishes. Grades such as VS1 and VS2 usually offer the best balance between visual quality and price because inclusions are not visible without magnification.

Carat

Carat measures a diamond’s weight. Since lab grown diamonds are more affordable per carat, buyers often choose larger stones than they would typically consider in natural diamonds.

Certification

Independent certification from organisations like IGI or GIA confirms the authenticity and quality of a lab grown diamond. All certified diamonds are graded according to the same professional standards used throughout the industry.

Which is better: CVD or HPHT?

Both methods produce genuine, high-quality diamonds. The choice usually comes down to manufacturer preference and individual stone characteristics rather than durability or beauty.

Are lab grown diamonds ethical?

They are considered an ethical and conflict-free alternative because no mining is involved in their production.

Are lab grown diamonds certified?

Yes. Reputable lab grown diamonds are commonly certified by IGI and GIA using the same grading system as natural diamonds.

Do lab grown diamonds lose their sparkle?

No. They retain their brilliance and durability exactly like mined diamonds when cared for properly.

Can people tell the difference between lab grown and natural diamonds?

Not visually. Even experienced jewellers require specialised equipment to identify the origin of a diamond.

Are lab grown diamonds real?

Yes, they are genuine diamonds with the same composition, hardness and brilliance as natural diamonds.
